Best Places to View the Moon in Tbilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi occupies a narrow river gorge at 380–500 m, hemmed in by volcanic plateaus and forested ridges on every side — a topography that makes the city feel more like a canyon than a capital. The summit park's open terraces give a sweeping 180° panorama over the entire Tbilisi basin: the Mtkvari gorge, the domed skyline of the old town, the ridge of the Caucasus foothills to the north, and the Soviet-era tower blocks of the new city. The moon rises over the eastern hills and floods the gorge below — one of the great city moonrise views in the Caucasus. The funicular runs 09:45–23:30 daily; the gondola operates noon–9pm. The park's restaurants and observation terraces are open until midnight.
Narikala Fortress – Ruined Ramparts & Open Ridge, 4th–17th Century
Tbilisi's defining landmark — a ruined 4th-century citadel sprawling across the ridge above the old city's sulphur bathhouse quarter, connected to the city by the Rike Park cable car (a 5-minute gondola from Rike Park on the riverbank). The fortress ramparts give unobstructed views down into the old town's jumble of balconied wooden houses, the Mtkvari River, and the illuminated Peace Bridge below — the moon rises over the eastern hills and silhouettes the ruined walls in extraordinary fashion. The viewpoint below the church looks directly west across the river at the entire old town of Kala, the bathhouse domes of Abanotubani, and Narikala Fortress on the ridge above. Turtle Lake – Elevated Forest Reservoir, Vake District, 770 m
A small natural lake set in forest at 770 m in the Vake hills above the city's western residential districts, accessible by cable car from Vake Park (a short Soviet-era gondola running year-round). The lake is ringed by pines and popular with evening strollers; the moonrise here is quieter and more forested than the old town viewpoints, with the glow of the city visible below through the trees. At the same elevation as Mtatsminda but on the opposite side of the city — a completely different atmosphere. Free to walk around; the cable car is a few lari each way.
Mtatsminda Pantheon – Writers' Cemetery & Mid-Station Terrace, 460 m
The funicular's mid-station opens onto the Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures — Georgia's national cemetery, set in the grounds of the ancient Mamadaviti Church carved into the cliff face of Mtatsminda. The gravestones of Georgia's most celebrated writers, composers, and national heroes are set into terraced gardens with direct views over the old city rooftops and the Mtkvari below. Abastumani Observatory – Mount Kanobili, 1,700 m (250 km SW)

The site averages around 250 clear nights per year with exceptional atmospheric transparency and virtually zero light pollution, surrounded by the conifer forests of Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.
