Best Places to View the Moon in Baku, Azerbaijan

Baku sits on the western shore of the Caspian Sea — the world's largest enclosed body of water — on the Absheron Peninsula, a flat, semi-arid tongue of land that juts eastward into the sea at roughly 0 m elevation. Azerbaijan's capital is a city of extraordinary contrasts: a UNESCO-listed medieval walled old city sits within walking distance of the flame-shaped LED skyscrapers of the modern financial district, while the Caspian promenade stretches for kilometres along a shoreline that glitters under both moonlight and oil-platform flares. Baku is a genuinely light-polluted capital city, but its long, flat waterfront, elevated hilltop parks, and position on the sea make it one of the most visually dramatic urban moonrise settings in the Caucasus region. For genuinely dark skies, the open steppe and mud volcanoes of Gobustan National Park, 60 km south, offer a completely different experience under the same moon.

1

Highland Park (Upland Park) – Summit Terrace & Funicular, 150 m

The #1 moonrise viewpoint in Baku. Highland Park — known locally as Dağüstü Park — sits on the ridge directly above the old city, reached by the glass-walled Baku funicular from Neftchilar Avenue (a 2-minute ride, open daily until midnight). The moon rises over the eastern Absheron steppe, silhouettes the three flame-shaped towers of the Flame Towers complex, and reflects off the Caspian Sea to the east — a 180° panorama that takes in the entire city, the bay, and the waterfront boulevard below. The Alley of Martyrs — Azerbaijan's most poignant national memorial — runs along the ridge beside the park, adding a layer of historical depth to the moonrise setting. Free entry to the park; funicular tickets are a few manat each way.

2

Baku Boulevard – Caspian Waterfront Promenade, 3.5 km

The Baku Boulevard is a 3.5 km seafront promenade running along the western edge of Baku Bay — the longest public waterfront in the South Caucasus. The moon rises directly over the Caspian Sea from here, casting a full silver path across the water that stretches to the horizon. The boulevard is illuminated but faces east, giving an unobstructed view over the open sea with the glowing Flame Towers reflected in the bay to the left. At full moon the Caspian moonrise here is among the most expansive in the entire region — the world's largest lake gives the moon maximum room to perform. Free and open 24/7; the most popular evening stroll in the city.

3

Icherisheher – UNESCO Old City Walls & Maiden Tower Terrace

Baku's UNESCO-listed Icherisheher (Inner City) is one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the entire Caucasus, with limestone ramparts, narrow alleys, caravanserais, and the iconic 12th-century Maiden Tower — a circular basalt structure of unknown original purpose that rises 29 m above the old city's eastern edge. The top of the Maiden Tower gives an elevated 360° view over the old city rooftops, the Caspian, and the glowing Flame Towers on the ridge — one of the most photogenic moonrise angles in Baku. The old city walls are walkable at night; the Maiden Tower observation deck charges a small entry fee and closes at 20:00.

4

Heydar Aliyev Centre – Grounds & Reflecting Pool, Zaha Hadid Architecture

The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre — designed by Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012 — is one of the most striking pieces of contemporary architecture in the world: a seamless, undulating white structure of flowing curves with no straight lines or sharp angles. Its exterior grounds include a wide reflecting pool that mirrors the building's white shell and the moon above it — one of the most architecturally distinctive moonrise settings in Baku. The grounds are publicly accessible at all hours; the building's white surface glows under moonlight with an almost supernatural quality. A 20-minute walk or short taxi from the old city.

5

Flag Square – National Flag Pole & Caspian Panorama

The plaza at the base of one of the world's tallest flagpoles — a 162-metre steel mast flying Azerbaijan's tricolour flag — sits on the ridge between Highland Park and the Flame Towers, with open views over Baku Bay and the Caspian Sea. The moon rises over the sea and the flagpole casts a long shadow across the ridge in full moonlight. Less visited than Highland Park but equally elevated and entirely free; the surrounding terrace is open 24/7. Best combined with a Highland Park visit as both are within easy walking distance along the ridge.

6

Yanar Dag – Burning Mountain, Absheron Peninsula, 25 km North

For a completely unique moonrise setting, Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain) is a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula where natural gas seeps continuously through porous sandstone and burns in an unbroken curtain of flame — reaching up to 3 m high — that has been documented by travellers since Marco Polo passed through in the 13th century. The moon rises over the open steppe behind the hill and the eternal flames glow copper-gold against the dark sky — there is simply no other moonrise setting like it anywhere in the world. The Yanar Dag State Reserve has a museum, visitor walkways, and is open daily until 22:00; entry is 15 AZN for foreign visitors. 25 km north of Baku by taxi (30–40 minutes).

Best Times for Moon Photography

🌕 Full Moon ±1 day — the Caspian moonrise from the Boulevard at its most dramatic; full silver path across the sea to the horizon
🌔 48–72 hrs before full moon — moon rises during blue hour with the Flame Towers LED display and the old city walls warmly lit
🍂 Oct–Apr — clearest skies; summer is often hazy over the Caspian but mild; winter nights are cold but deliver the best atmospheric transparency

📷 Quick Photography Tips

🎯Sturdy tripod — the Baku Boulevard seafront gets a consistent Caspian breeze; essential for long exposures over the water and on Highland Park ridge
📷Shoot RAW; the Flame Towers LED display cycles through amber and blue — time your exposure to match the warmest flame sequence for the best contrast against the lunar disc
🌙Looney 11 rule works well in the city; at Yanar Dag the eternal flame adds a second light source — bracket your exposures to capture both the moon and the foreground fire
🔦White light is fine across all city spots; at Yanar Dag the flames provide their own dramatic illumination — no torch needed at the viewing platform
🌡️Baku's Caspian location keeps winter temperatures moderate but the ridge wind at Highland Park and Flag Square can be sharp after dark — bring a layer year-round

🕐 Timezone

Baku observes AZT (UTC+4) year-round — Azerbaijan does not observe daylight saving time. Apps like PhotoPills or Stellarium handle the offset automatically when you set your location to Baku.
