Best Places to View the Moon in Stockholm
Stockholm’s archipelago setting, historic skyline, and northern latitude give moonrises a crisp, magical quality – especially when the moon reflects over the water or aligns with City Hall. Here are the top spots (all free and accessible 24/7 unless noted):
Fjällgatan – viewpoint terrace (Södermalm)
The absolute #1 Stockholm moonrise classic. Elevated street with panoramic views over Gamla Stan, Riddarholmen, and City Hall’s golden crown. The moon rises dead-centre behind the old town spires on many dates – stunning reflections in Saltsjön bay.
Monteliusvägen – walking path (Södermalm)
Narrow cliffside path with benches overlooking Riddarfjärden bay. The moon rises behind City Hall tower and the historic rooftops – intimate, romantic, and very photogenic with water below.
Skinnarviksberget – hilltop park (Södermalm)
Highest natural point in central Stockholm (~53 m). Slightly darker skies; the moon rises over the city with City Hall and Kungsholmen perfectly framed. Grassy rock outcrop for tripods; popular picnic spot.
Västerbron Bridge – pedestrian walkway
Iconic arched bridge with the moon rising behind City Hall and the western skyline. Reflections in Riddarfjärden; great symmetry from the central span.
Mariaberget / Ivar Los Park – cliff edge (Södermalm)
Quiet viewpoint near Monteliusvägen. The moon rises over the water with City Hall tower glowing – beautiful foreground with old wooden houses.
Kungsklippan – waterfront promenade (Kungsholmen)
Riverside path directly opposite City Hall. The moon rises behind the tower across the water – mirror reflections and golden crown lights create postcard shots.
Best Times for Moon Photography
- Full Moon ±1 day — brightest and most impressive
- 48–72 hours before full moon — moon rises during golden/blue hour for soft Nordic light
- November–February — moon path more southerly (tightest City Hall alignments); winter skies often clearest
Moonrise & Timezone
Stockholm operates on CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer. Clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October. PhotoPills or Stellarium handle it automatically.
Quick Photography Tips
- Sturdy tripod (bay wind is strong)
- Shoot RAW and expose for the moon
- Looney 11 rule works great against City Hall lights
- Winter nights give razor-sharp reflections and minimal haze
Enjoy the moon over Sweden’s capital — few cities blend water, history, and lunar beauty this perfectly!
