☽ Best Places to View the Moon in Fez
Fez (also spelled Fès) sits at roughly 400 m elevation in the foothills of the Middle Atlas, cradled by hills and bisected by the Fez River. Its UNESCO-listed medina, Fes el-Bali, is the world's largest car-free urban area — a dense maze of minarets, zellige-tiled madrasas, and tannery rooftops that glows amber under a rising moon. Unlike coastal cities, Fez's inland position means the moon rises over rolling hills and fortress silhouettes rather than open water, creating an atmosphere of timeless mystery. The city's elevated hilltop forts to the north and south provide panoramic terraces from which the full sweep of the illuminated medina unfolds beneath a moonlit sky. All spots below are free and accessible unless noted.
Marinid Tombs (Mérinides) – North Hill Viewpoint
Fez's most celebrated viewpoint and the undisputed best spot for moonrise. Perched on the northern ridge above Fes el-Bali, the 14th–15th-century Marinid royal necropolis offers a sweeping panorama of the entire medina — minarets, green-tiled rooftops, and the Zawiya of Moulay Idris II — with the hills of the Middle Atlas on the horizon. At full moon, the medina glows gold beneath a rising moon. Free; open continuously.
Borj Nord – 16th-Century Fortress Terrace
Built in 1582 by the Saadian Sultan Ahmad al-Mansour, Borj Nord sits on the northern hill at ~402 m, adjacent to the Marinid Tombs. Its rooftop terrace delivers a panoramic city view with slightly more elevation and a direct sightline over the valley. Houses the Museum of Arms. Entrance fee applies; closed Tuesdays.
Borj Sud – South Hill Overlook
The southern counterpart to Borj Nord — also built in 1582 — sits on a hilltop overlooking Fes el-Bali from the south. It offers a complementary vantage point to Borj Nord, facing the medina from the opposite direction. Generally less crowded than the northern viewpoints and considered by some photographers to deliver a superior angle on the city's southern quarters. Free access; no museum inside.
Chouara Tannery Rooftop Terraces – Fes el-Bali
The 11th-century Chouara Tannery — the largest in Fez, still operating using medieval techniques — is surrounded by leather shops whose upper terraces provide elevated views directly over the iconic circular dye vats and down into the labyrinthine medina. On a full moon night, the tannery's ochre-and-indigo palette glows under lunar light. Access through surrounding shops; a small tip to the shopkeeper is customary.
Bab Boujloud (Blue Gate) Esplanade – Western Medina
Fez's most photographed gateway, Bab Boujloud frames the entrance to the medina with an ornate blue-tiled exterior and green interior. The open esplanade in front of the gate offers a wide sightline eastward — the moon rising over the medina's minarets and domes with this gate in the foreground is one of the city's most striking night scenes. Free and accessible 24/7.
Mount Zalagh – Hilltop Panorama (~30 min hike)
Rising to 902 m northwest of the city, Mount Zalagh rewards a moderate hike with an unobstructed 360° view of Fez below and the snow-capped Atlas peaks on the horizon. On full moon nights, the medina spreads beneath you in miniature, silver and amber, with zero light pollution from above. Best approached in the late afternoon to arrive at summit for moonrise. No fee; accessible by foot or taxi to the trailhead.
