Full Moon Names and Their Meanings
These are traditional names, drawn from Native American, colonial American and European sources. They follow the seasons rather than how the moon looks, and they can vary by region and tradition.
Wolf Moon
Named for the wolves heard howling around settlements in the depths of winter, when snow lay deep and food was scarce.
Snow Moon
February was historically the snowiest month across much of North America, which gave the month’s full moon its name. Some traditions also call it the Hunger Moon.
Worm Moon
As the ground thaws and softens, earthworms become active and robins return to feed on them, an early sign that winter’s grip is loosening.
Pink Moon
Named for moss pink, a wild ground phlox and one of the earliest widespread spring flowers. The moon itself does not look pink.
Flower Moon
By May, flowers are in full bloom across the Northern Hemisphere, and the name marks the peak of spring growth.
Strawberry Moon
Named by Algonquin tribes for the short wild strawberry harvest. It falls near the June solstice, so it rides low in the sky for northern observers and can look golden.
Buck Moon
By July the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full growth, pushing through their velvet covering.
Sturgeon Moon
Giant sturgeon in the Great Lakes and nearby waters were most readily caught around this part of summer.
Harvest Moon
The full moon closest to the September equinox. Around then the moon rises only a little later each evening, which gave farmers extra light to bring in crops. In years when it lands in October, the September full moon is usually called the Corn Moon.
Hunter’s Moon
The full moon after the Harvest Moon. With the crops reaped and the deer fattened, the open fields made game easier to spot.
Beaver Moon
Linked to the season for setting beaver traps before the swamps froze, to secure warm winter furs.
Cold Moon
The last full moon of the year, rising over the longest, darkest nights as winter cold takes hold. Also known as the Long Night Moon.
Blue Moon
Popularly, the second full moon in a single calendar month, as on May 31, 2026. It is not blue in colour. 2027 has no Blue Moon.
