Moon Phase Sequence

Drag the moons to arrange them from New Moon (1) to Waning Crescent (8).

Mission Debrief: Sequence Status

In the game above, you attempted to reorganize the lunar cycle. Astronomers divide this cycle into 8 distinct phases based on the geometric alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. How sharp is your memory?

The 8 Stages of the Lunar Month

The moon does not emit its own light; it reflects sunlight. The "phase" we see depends on where the moon is in its orbit around Earth relative to the Sun. We group these into two primary categories: Waxing (Growing) and Waning (Shrinking).

📈 The Waxing Phases (Light Grows Right-to-Left)

🌑 1. New Moon
Alignment: Sun — Moon — Earth.
The moon is between us and the sun. The side facing Earth is in complete shadow. This is the start of the lunar cycle (Day 0).
🌒 2. Waxing Crescent
A sliver of light appears on the right side. This is when "Earthshine" (a faint glow on the dark side) is most visible.
🌓 3. First Quarter
Age: ~7.4 Days.
The moon has completed 1/4 of its orbit. It looks like a "Half Moon," illuminated exactly 50% on the right side.
🌔 4. Waxing Gibbous
"Gibbous" means bulging. The moon is more than half full but not quite complete. It rises in the afternoon and sets after midnight.

📉 The Waning Phases (Darkness Grows Right-to-Left)

🌕 5. Full Moon
Alignment: Sun — Earth — Moon.
Age: ~14.8 Days.
Earth is between the sun and moon. The entire face is illuminated. Tides are at their highest (Spring Tides).
🌖 6. Waning Gibbous
The light begins to retreat. The left side is lit, but the right side falls into shadow. This phase is visible late at night and in the morning.
🌗 7. Last Quarter
Age: ~22.1 Days.
The moon has completed 3/4 of its journey. The left 50% is lit. It rises around midnight and sets at noon.
🌘 8. Waning Crescent
The final goodbye. A thin sliver of light on the left side, visible just before sunrise. The cycle then resets to New Moon.

The "DOC" Mnemonic

💡

How do you tell if the moon is Waxing (growing) or Waning (shrinking)? In the Northern Hemisphere, remember the acronym D.O.C.

  • D: Waxing Moon (Light is on the Right, shaped like a 'D').
  • O: Full Moon (Round like an 'O').
  • C: Waning Moon (Light is on the Left, shaped like a 'C').

Advanced Intel: Synodic vs. Sidereal

Did you know the moon has two different "month" lengths? The time it takes to cycle through its phases is different from the time it takes to orbit the Earth.

TypeDurationDefinition
Synodic Month29.53 Days This is the "Lunar Cycle" (New Moon to New Moon). Because Earth is also moving around the Sun, the Moon has to travel a little extra distance (2.2 days worth) to get back to the same alignment with the Sun.
Sidereal Month27.32 Days This is the "Orbital Period" (Star to Star). It is the time it takes for the Moon to complete one 360° orbit around Earth relative to the background stars.
