Best Places to View the Moon in Delhi
Delhi’s light pollution can make astronomy difficult, but the moon is bright enough to punch through almost anywhere. For truly spectacular views and the best moonrise-over-skyline photographs, here are the top spots (all free and accessible 24/7 unless noted):
Qutub Minar Complex – upper lawns & viewing areas
The absolute #1 Delhi moonrise spot. Elevated historic site with the moon rising behind the iconic 73 m minaret and surrounding ruins – perfect silhouette shots with ancient architecture. Entry fee ~₹40 (foreigners ₹600); open until 8 pm.
Lotus Temple (Bahá’í House of Worship) – surrounding gardens
Iconic lotus-shaped temple with open eastern horizon. The moon rises over the temple and distant skyline – stunning reflections in the pools; entry free, open until sunset (but exterior views 24h).
Humayun’s Tomb – gardens & charbagh
UNESCO site with the moon rising over the tomb dome and minarets – beautiful symmetry and water channels for reflections; entry fee ~₹40 (foreigners ₹600).
Purana Qila (Old Fort) – ramparts & lake
Historic fort with elevated walls. The moon rises over the city with the lake reflecting – dramatic ancient foreground; entry fee, open until sunset.
India Gate & Rajpath – lawns
Central monument with the moon rising over the skyline and Rashtrapati Bhavan in the distance – wide open space and iconic foreground; very popular on full moons.
Lodhi Gardens – high points
Peaceful park with tombs and open lawns. The moon rises over the city – quieter and greener alternative with historic framing.
Best Times for Moon Photography
- Full Moon ±1 day — brightest and most impressive
- 48–72 hours before full moon — moon rises during golden/blue hour for beautiful colour contrast
- October–March — clearest skies, lower humidity, moon path more southerly and higher
Moonrise & Timezone
Delhi operates on IST (UTC+5:30) year-round (no daylight saving). Apps like PhotoPills, The Photographer’s Ephemeris or Stellarium automatically apply the correct offset.
Quick Photography Tips
- Use a sturdy tripod (wind on elevated sites is strong)
- Shoot RAW and expose for the moon (it’s much brighter than the city)
- Looney 11 rule works great: f/11, ISO 100 → ~1/100 s for full moon
- The most magical light is 10–20 minutes after official moonrise when the moon is low and appears huge
- Check for clear eastern horizons and low humidity
