Best Moon Phase for
Salmon Fishing
Salmon run on instinct — but the moon decides when instinct ignites.
Salmon are among the most tidal-sensitive fish in the world. Their entire life is oriented around water movement — staging offshore, pushing into estuaries, surging upriver — and the moon is the engine behind the tides that trigger each of those moves. Understanding how lunar phases align with salmon run timing is the difference between being on the water during the surge and arriving the day after it happened.
Unlike most freshwater species where moon phase adjusts when fish feed, salmon are anadromous migrants. For them, the moon doesn't just influence feeding windows — it influences when fish commit to entering river systems and how aggressively they push upstream. New and full moons produce the strongest tidal flows (spring tides), and it is precisely these tidal surges that pull staging salmon from saltwater into river mouths. Once in fresh water, salmon stop feeding entirely — so the entire game is about intercepting fish in tidal reaches and river mouths while they are still actively moving.
Salmon runs are triggered by a combination of water temperature, river flow, and tidal forces. New and full moons generate spring tides — the strongest tidal surges of the lunar cycle — which create the increased water movement that draws staging fish from saltwater into estuaries and river mouths. Research and angler records consistently show that the heaviest run pushes occur within a 3–4 day window around new and full moons. Quarter moons produce weaker neap tides and correspondingly weaker run pushes. Targeting the tidal mouth and lower river on these peak windows is the foundation of lunar salmon strategy.

The four phases
The new moon produces some of the strongest spring tides of the month. Dark skies combined with powerful tidal movement create ideal conditions for salmon to surge from saltwater staging areas into estuaries and river mouths. This is widely considered the single most productive phase for intercepting running fish.
Full moon spring tides are equally powerful as new moon tides. Ambient moonlight allows salmon to navigate estuaries more confidently at night, extending the active window. The 3 days either side of the full moon — particularly the incoming tide — are prime interception windows at river mouths.
Quarter moons generate neap tides — the weakest tidal exchange of the lunar cycle. Run pushes are smaller and less committed. Fish that enter estuaries during neap periods often stage at the mouth rather than driving upriver. Use this phase to scout holding water and adjust your positioning for the next spring tide window.
Solar and lunar eclipses during 2026 (total lunar eclipse Mar 3, total solar eclipse Aug 12) fall on new or full moon days — meaning they coincide with spring tides, already the strongest tidal surge of the month. If these dates align with your regional run timing, fish hard.
The 45-minute incoming tide window
For salmon at river mouths and tidal reaches, the single most productive window is the 45 minutes before and the first hour of an incoming high tide — particularly when that tide falls on or near a new or full moon. This is when water movement is strongest, dissolved oxygen levels are highest, and salmon are most actively pushing upstream.
"Be at the river mouth before the tide turns. When the moon lines up with a big incoming tide, salmon push in waves — if you're not already in position, you'll watch other boats into fish while you're still idling in."
— Guide, Kenai River, AlaskaCheck tide tables alongside your moon phase calendar. Find the day when a new or full moon aligns with a large incoming tide, arrive 45 minutes before high water, and fish intensely through the first hour of the flood. This intersection of lunar force and tidal movement is when the heaviest run surges happen.
Spring tides (within 2 days of new or full moon) raise and lower water levels far more than neap tides. At river mouths, this means baitfish are pushed further into the estuary — and salmon follow. Target the shallow edges of the channel mouth on the first flood after a new or full moon for the best interception window of the month.
Season strategy by species
| Species / Season | Best phase | Target water | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steelhead (Jan–Mar, Dec) | New moon | Tidal reaches & lower river pools | Winter steelhead enter rivers closer to spawning maturity. New moon incoming tides trigger the heaviest pushes. Target slow deep pools and tidal flats at moonrise. Dec–Feb peak. |
| Spring Chinook (Apr–May, PNW) | New & full | River mouths, estuary channels | Spring Chinook in Columbia, Willamette, and coastal PNW rivers. Both spring tides produce run pushes. Fish incoming tides at river mouths. Trophy fish are pre-spawn fat. |
| King Salmon (May–Jul, Alaska) | New & full | Kenai, Copper River, coastal rivers | Alaska King runs open mid-May. New and full moon tides produce the strongest pushes into tidal rivers. Kenai peaks June. Fish the incoming tide at the mouth. Troll herring or hoochies. |
| Sockeye (Jun–Jul) | New moon | Bristol Bay, Kenai, Fraser River | New moon produces the largest tidal exchange. Sockeye push into rivers in waves — biggest waves on spring tides. Drift presentations in the tidal zone at dawn. |
| Coho / Atlantic (Aug–Oct) | Full moon | Estuaries, tidal pools, river mouths | Coho and Atlantic salmon peak Sep–Oct. Full moon extends the active fishing window into evening. Atlantic salmon in Nova Scotia peak Sep–Oct; Scotland season runs through October. Fish incoming tides hard. |
| Chum (Oct–Nov) | Full moon | Coastal rivers, tidal reaches | Late season Chum on big tides in PNW and Alaska. Full moon incoming tides push fish into river systems. Last aggressive window before winter staging. |

The Spring Tide Run Window
For salmon anglers, no concept is more important than the spring tide window. Spring tides — which occur within 2–3 days of every new and full moon — produce the strongest tidal exchange of the month. It is during these tidal surges that staging salmon commit to river systems. The fish that were holding in the estuary last week suddenly push hard upstream over a 48–72 hour period.
The window doesn't last. After the spring tide peak passes and tides begin to moderate toward neap, run intensity drops sharply. This means timing matters more for salmon than almost any other freshwater or inshore species. A well-timed trip on a spring tide during active run season will consistently outperform a longer trip timed to a quarter moon.
Salmon stop feeding the moment they enter fresh water — no exceptions. The entire mission in the river is to intercept fish while they are still actively moving, not holding. River-mouth and lower tidal sections on spring tides are where fish are actively travelling. Upper-river pools hold resting fish that require a very different, slower approach to provoke a reaction strike.
Quick reference cheat sheet
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| New moon, river mouth | Strongest spring tide of the month — best interception window. Fish incoming tide from 45 min before high water. UV/glow lures after dark. Position on the channel seam. |
| Full moon, river mouth | Spring tide push plus ambient light extends the active window into evening. Natural herring presentations in the upper water column. Fish 3 hours either side of high tide. |
| 2–3 days post-spring-tide, upper river | Fish pushed in on the tidal surge have moved into holding pools. Drift roe or swing intruder flies through deep tailouts at dawn. Slow down — these fish are not travelling. |
| Quarter moon (neap tide), any water | Run push weakest. Fewer fish entering the system. Scout holding water, fine-tune presentations. Book your next trip for the coming spring tide window instead. |
| Ocean / staging area, new or full moon | Intercept pre-run fish staging outside river mouths on the spring tide. Troll flasher-hoochie rigs at 60–150 ft on the 10–30 fathom line. Dawn and dusk produce peak bites. |
| Eclipse windows (Mar 3, Aug 12 in 2026) | These dates fall on new or full moons, meaning they coincide with spring tides — already the strongest tidal surge of the month. If run timing aligns, fish hard all day. |
