Best Places to View the Moon in Sydney
Sydney’s light pollution can make astronomy difficult, but the moon is bright enough to punch through almost anywhere. For truly spectacular views and the best moonrise-over-skyline photographs, here are the top spots (all free and accessible 24/7 unless noted):
Mrs Macquaries Point (Royal Botanic Garden)
The most famous and protected viewpoint. Looking west-northwest, the moon rises directly behind the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge on many dates — the single most iconic “moonrise postcard” shot in the world. Arrive early on full-moon evenings. Nearest: Circular Quay station or bus.
Observatory Hill Park (The Rocks / Millers Point)
Elevated historic park with the moon rising dead-centre over the Harbour Bridge and Luna Park. Slightly darker skies than Circular Quay; perfect for wide-angle silhouettes with the old observatory in the foreground. Nearest: Wynyard or Circular Quay station + short walk.
Cremorne Point Reserve & MacCallum Pool
North-shore gem with an unobstructed eastern horizon. The moon rises straight over the CBD skyline and Opera House across the water — stunning reflections on calm nights and far fewer crowds than Mrs Macquaries. Nearest: Cremorne Point ferry wharf.
Bradfield Park & Kirribilli (under the Harbour Bridge north side)
Close-up drama as the moon rises between the bridge pylons and behind the Opera House. Best in winter when the moon’s path swings more southerly; great for telephoto compression shots. Nearest: Milsons Point station or ferry.
Dudley Page Reserve (Dover Heights)
Eastern-suburbs hidden champion with elevated, completely clear views over the ocean and city. The moon rises out of the Pacific and climbs above the skyline — often perfectly aligned with the CBD towers. Very popular with local photographers. Nearest: Bondi Junction + 379 bus.
Hornby Lighthouse & South Head (Watsons Bay)
Dramatic coastal spot where the moon rises over the ocean and silhouettes the historic lighthouse and Sydney Heads. Best on nights when the moonrise azimuth is 60–80° (check PhotoPills). Nearest: Watsons Bay ferry or 324/325 bus.
Best Times for Moon Photography
- Full Moon ±1 day — brightest and most impressive
- 48–72 hours before full moon — moon rises during golden/blue hour for beautiful colour contrast
- May–August (southern-hemisphere winter) — moon travels higher and more southerly, aligning perfectly with the Opera House & Bridge
Moonrise & Timezone
Sydney operates on AEST (UTC+10) most of the year and AEDT (UTC+11) during daylight saving). Clocks go forward on the first Sunday of October and back on the first Sunday of April. Any good app (PhotoPills, The Photographer’s Ephemeris, Stellarium) automatically applies the correct offset for Sydney.
Quick Photography Tips
- Use a sturdy tripod
- Shoot RAW and expose for the moon (it’s much brighter than the city lights)
- Start with the Looney 11 rule: f/11, ISO 100 → ~1/100 s for full moon
- The most magical light is 10–20 minutes after official moonrise when the moon is low and appears huge
- Check for clear eastern/south-eastern horizons and low humidity (winter nights are best)
Enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful urban moonrises!
