Moon Phase in Paris
Paris is eternally romantic as the City of Light, but the Eiffel Tower takes on a magical aura under the moonlight. Whether viewed from the Trocadéro or the banks of the Seine, the iron lattice silhouetted against the night sky, accompanied by the moon’s reflection on the water, creates an unforgettable Parisian tableau.

Best Places to View the Moon in Paris
Paris’s light pollution can make astronomy difficult, but the moon is bright enough to punch through almost anywhere. For truly spectacular views and the best moonrise-over-skyline photographs, here are the top spots (all free and accessible 24/7 unless noted):
Trocadéro Gardens (Jardins du Trocadéro)
The most famous and protected viewpoint. Looking southeast, the moon rises directly above the Eiffel Tower and central skyline on many dates. Perfect for classic silhouette shots with fountains in the foreground. Nearest metro: Trocadéro (lines 6/9).
Pont Alexandre III
Iconic composition with the moon rising over the Seine, framed by the golden bridge lamps and the Eiffel Tower in the distance. Slightly elevated for dramatic reflections on the water. Nearest: Pont Alexandre III (RER C or metro Invalides).
Sacré-Cœur Basilica – Terrace (Montmartre)
Paris’s highest point (130 m) with noticeably darker skies and a huge 180° panorama. The moon often aligns perfectly with the basilica dome and city rooftops on evenings—excellent for wide-angle shots and usually less crowded at dusk. Nearest: Anvers (line 2) + funicular.
Tour Montparnasse Observation Deck
South Paris’s high terrace (210 m) with a wide, unobstructed view. The moon rises dead-centre over the Eiffel Tower and skyline—ideal for telephoto moonshots; open until 23:00 (fee €21). Nearest: Montparnasse-Bienvenüe (lines 4/6/12/13).
Pont des Arts Footbridge
For dramatic shots of the moon rising behind the Institut de France or over the Louvre. Best in winter when the moon’s path is more southerly; pedestrian-only for easy access. Nearest: Pont Neuf (line 7) or Cité (line 4).
Galeries Lafayette Rooftop (Opéra District)
Hidden gem with surprisingly dark skies for central Paris and a completely clear eastern horizon—ideal for panoramic moonshots over the Opéra Garnier and rooftops. Free; open until 20:00 weekdays. Nearest: Opéra (lines 3/7/8).
Best Times for Moon Photography
- Full Moon ±1 day — brightest and most impressive
- 48–72 hours before full moon — moon rises during golden/blue hour for beautiful colour contrast
- October–February — moon travels higher and more southerly, aligning perfectly with the skyline

Quick Photography Tips
- Use a sturdy tripod
- Shoot RAW and expose for the moon (it’s much brighter than the city lights)
- Start with the Looney 11 rule: f/11, ISO 100 → ~1/100 s for full moon
- The most magical light is 10–20 minutes after official moonrise when the moon is low and appears huge
- Check for clear eastern horizons and low humidity
Enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful urban moonrises!
