Best Places to View the Moon in Mumbai
Mumbai’s light pollution can make astronomy difficult, but the moon is bright enough to punch through almost anywhere. For truly spectacular views and the best moonrise-over-skyline photographs, here are the top spots (all free and accessible 24/7 unless noted):
Marine Drive (Nariman Point to Chowpatty)
The undisputed queen of Mumbai’s moonrise spot. The moon rises directly over the Arabian Sea and climbs behind the curving skyline of Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar Temple and high-rises. Classic “Queen’s Necklace” shots with sea reflections are world-famous. Best from the promenade near Oberoi/Trident or Chowpatty Beach end.
Bandra Bandstand & Carter Road Promenade
Iconic sea-facing stretch where the moon rises straight out of the sea and silhouettes the Sea Link bridge and Worli skyline. Far less crowded than Marine Drive; perfect golden-hour colour contrast. Nearest: Bandra West local stations or bus.
Worli Sea Face (opposite Haji Ali)
Wide-open southern view with the moon rising behind the Bandra–Worli Sea Link and distant city towers. The illuminated bridge cables create dramatic leading lines; usually breezy and less crowded after sunset.
Gorai Beach / Essel World Jetty (Borivali side)
Northern hidden gem with almost zero light obstruction. The moon rises cleanly over the sea and, on perfect dates, aligns with the distant skyline and Sea Link. Very popular with photographers during Sharad Purnima and Karva Chauth.
Powai Lake (Hiranandani side)
Inland surprise with surprisingly dark surroundings. The moon rises over the water and reflects perfectly, framed by high-rises and the hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Great for calm-water mirror shots; easy parking.
Kanheri Caves viewpoint (Sanjay Gandhi National Park)
Highest accessible point inside Mumbai (up to ~480 m). Noticeably darker skies and cooler; the moon rises over the entire city sprawl from Thane to South Mumbai — breathtaking panoramic telephoto shots. Entry gate closes 17:30, so arrive early or stay for sunrise moonset.
Best Times for Moon Photography
- Full Moon ±1 day — brightest and most impressive
- 48–72 hours before full moon — moon rises around sunset for golden/blue hour magic
- October–March (winter) — clearest skies, lower humidity, moon path more southerly and higher
Moonrise & Timezone
Mumbai operates on IST (UTC+5:30) year-round (no daylight saving). Apps like PhotoPills, The Photographer’s Ephemeris or Stellarium automatically apply the correct offset.
Quick Photography Tips
- Use a sturdy tripod (sea breeze is strong)
- Shoot RAW and expose for the moon (it’s much brighter than the city)
- Looney 11 rule works great: f/11, ISO 100 → ~1/100 s for full moon
- Magical window is 10–25 minutes after moonrise when it’s huge and orange over the sea
- Check tide times — high tide gives better sea reflections at Marine Drive and Bandra
Enjoy Mumbai’s legendary sea-rise moons — some of the most dramatic on the planet!
